Hi All, Here's the latest from my Hillclimbing. This weekend just gone was at Loton park where there was a Midland (not British) Championship Meeting.
Note for your diaries - Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of August Shelsley Walsh - 100th Anniversary Meeting - see www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk for more information on the biggest event of the year! If you can only come to one event every few years, or haven't come to a hillclimb before then this is the one. Saturday is the British Championship meeting and Sunday an invitation only event (I'm invited) with both modern and historically important cars. Expect big crowds but it will be worth it.
Summary - Loton August Midland Meeting Rain on Saturday but reasonable weather on Sunday meant that we all got a fair go at competing. I managed a win in the first runoff but had a rear suspension failure during qualifying for the second which didn't help matters. A not entirely harmless spin resulted, but no damage to the driver (or anyone else) and it is all repairable so we should be in good order for the Shelsley meeting. I managed to hang on to the "best time of day" which was lucky as both Roger and Scott Moran were "on one" this weekend. The other not so good news for the Edwards Hospitality www.edwards-hospitality.co.uk supported cars was that Rob Turnbull had some sort of failure in his gearbox which looked every bit as expensive as my suspension failure. Big thanks to Colin and Tony for the preparation of the car pre-event and to David Spires and the two Steve's as well as to Kelvin for their help at the weekend.
The Details Few details this time as I have real work to do as well!! With Bill away I got to drive the truck again. No dramas. Had the luxury of a shower (and we worked out how to get the temperature just right - which was a bonus!) but was tied to the event as there was no way I was driving the truck all the way back home to say the night there. That meant Sue could not come which was probably a good job on Sunday especially (with me spinning on the straight where I broke my back!). Because we were staying at the venue on Saturday evening we walked into Wales for dinner (it's less than a mile from Loton to the "border") and that was just perfect relaxation before the event on Sunday. Fantastic food and a good old chin wag, great! Thanks to Dave for his extended efforts, to Kelvin for helping out after having just come along to watch and to the two Steves who journeyed up on Sunday morning early (hell, they must have left home on Saturday night to make it to Loton that early on Sunday). With the luxury of 4 people attending me and the car I sent the boys out in shifts to watch as often they don't get the chance. The two Steves were on the main "straight" when the suspension failed and Bill tells me they're "never going to watch again" as it was "terrifying to watch" - firstly the speed with which I was travelling and then they knew I was going to be in trouble exactly when I did as they saw the suspension go just as I felt it go........ David Grace, who's sharing with me on the Sunday at Shelsley came up to Loton for a seat fitting - we were hoping he could do a "demonstration run" at lunch time but he was refused (we hadn't bothered to organise anything before hand). I'm glad the failure didn't happen to him!... He'll be wanting to look at the documentation for the repair before he gets into it now!! Me I'll be taking rose joint replacement much more seriously than ever before....... That's it for now, All the best to you Willem
Next Meeting is at Shelsley Walsh next weekend Shelsley should be a great event to come and see. Half a day is enough to see a lot of action so don't let a busy weekend worry you. Expect queues early on Saturday and Sunday but if you arrive at 11am or so these should have subsided - you'll have missed some of the action but you can still see all of the fastest cars and still come and see the amazing selection of cars. Have a look at the Shelsley web site for more information and please do your best to come and say "hi".
