2007 Review and 2008 Preview from the Electric Chair

It was a repeat of the 2006 season with another very tight battle at the top of the Championship between
Martin Groves
and Scott Moran

Scott seemed to be the peoples’ favourite at the start of 07 as Martin suffered a few mechanical problems early in the year. Martin fought back when it looked like Scott had it all wrapped, to win it at the final meeting decider with a new Shelsley record in the first run off.  Scott ended up second again just ahead of father Roger.

Simon Durling had another good year with taking a run off win at Wiscombe, one of the venues that he won last year and he finished an excellent 4th overall .  Trevor Willis had his strongest year in the Championship to date with lots of good qualifying and a first ever outright win for an OMS at Bouley Bay.

It was good being there to see it.  Then he followed that up with a joint victory at the second run off in Wiscombe with Marin Groves.

Chris Merrick was out again in the Gould Judd.  Chris narrowly missed a debut run off win at Wiscombe and with the help of wife Val the Merrick team were once again head of the mid-field.

Paul Ranson once again was out sharing the now brighter yellow Gould with now three times Champion Martin Groves.  Paul unfortunately had to miss Guernsey due to floods at home and Wiscombe because they didn’t receive his entry.

Deryk Young was out again in the ex-Wight Jnr Gould now with his own methanol Judd engine fitted.  This year wife Sue shared with him at all the meetings that Deryk did and they both did well.  Sue got lots of records and a couple of run off places.  Basil Pitt was again in his blue and yellow Gould which matches my chair and jacket.  He once again won the Y Gelli Trophy and got a number ( 8 ) for the first time ever.

Tom New had another consistent year in the 2 litre Pilbeam V6 by clinching 10th place.

Rob Turnbull returned after his big off at Wiscombe and was going steady and qualified for several run offs.
Two people that almost made it into the top ten with good performances were

Jos Goodyear
and Ollie Tomlin.

Graeme Wight Jnr returned to the hills at the June Doune where it looked like the V10 was all sorted but the gearbox was still not right.  Graeme got a good second place with the car at Shelsley in October.

Mike Endean got the closed car record at his first ever racing visit with the car at the June Shelsley.

Now some predictions for 2008

Scott and father Roger will return in the yellow Gould to hopefully get a family 1 – 2.  Martin Groves is expected by many to sit out 2008 but equally might be back if he doesn’t manage to sell the car.

Trevor Willis will be back in the OMS V8 and in 2008, with no Groves, he is looking good for a third place.  Graeme Wight Jnr is due to return with the GWR Predator with V8 Judd power and if it goes it well could get fourth.

Simon Durling has sold the Gould to Gurston regular Karl Davison and Simon has left the big class to drive a classic Brabham at selected events next year.  Terry Davis is due to be out in his new Reynard V8 which will a new addition to the big class.

Chris Merrick might, if he can sell his Gould, share the ex-Durling Gould with Karl Davison again.  Tom New is believed to looking at options of getting a drive in a big car, perhaps with someone like Team Moose or Basil Pitt.

Will Hall will make the move up to racing cars in 2008 in the second Ian Dayson built Force.  I bet it will be red until he knocks bits off.

There is a new Gould due to out for the Moyse family with a supercharged bike engine.  Hopefully it will be out early in the year.

Remember next season doesn’t start at the usual venue of Loton Park but Prescott has taken that honour and Loton moves to September.

The Electric Chair is having a restricted 2008 season due to other commitments but will be at most events like Prescott, Loton, Wiscombe and Gurston.

See you at Prescott in April and have a good Christmas.

And finally a big thank to Richard and Georgia Dunn for bring you the electric chair. (Thanks).

Nick.
