Willem's Gurston Weekend News Well it’s not actually Gurston news because we didn’t go. [However, his onboard camera did go, and Willem will find out what happened when he reads to the bottom of the page].
Present plan is to go to Shelsley, hopefully with some tweeks done to the engine in the 3 weeks since the last event. This will be next weekend. www.shelsley-walsh.co.ukWe will then discuss with the boys about the next rounds. All the best everyone Willem 'Richard's News' - Tim Mason onboard from Gurston. Thanks for the loan of your onboard video camera. We used it on the car of Tim and Will Mason, this turned out to be not such a good idea!! Tim rolled the car heavily in hollow as Will looked on from the start. I filmed it from the start and had one of those horrible moments looking at the emotions in Will as he tried to get a better view before being ushered back by others. Tim was A okay, the car was not, Willem cam survived even though it was mounted on the roll bar. The video from onboard the car and offboard were posted here with Tim and Will's permission. they have now gone and instead you get a picture of Tim leaving the line.
Hope to see you back out again soon. Willem, your camera still works, a few grass stains... Within minutes of uploading the video William phoned to confirm the cause was the front wing. Willem Toet emailed with a technical response; "...............Fantastic to have the evidence in front of your eyes - I looked at 6am this morning and didn't pay that much attention just saw the understeer. The rear of the front wing seems to drop down at the kink reducing wing angle and hence the downforce (RH FWEP comes up and you can see more main plane plus you can see an angle change on the timing strut on the left). I'd say that from then on Tim was a passenger. Does not even look like the wing caught on anything specific - it just seems to have collapsed. Frightening display of the power of aerodynamics! I'll get the boys to have a real good look at mine......" The car had a quick repair from the run before when William Mason had gone mowing and removed the front wing. Tim Mason has provided the following further information;
"......it was interesting to read Willem's
technical response to the accident as it does show the power of current wings
and what happens when they are not around.
There is one point that needs clarification - the
wing failed due to a very poor repair by me and was not in any way due to its
original construction or design. I do not want anyone in doubt over the
performance or structure of these wings which have allowed our car to produce
some very good results against stiff competition and sustain a number of
excursions off the track - almost without damage."
The videos have now been removed, they use too much bandwidth. Tim and Will will have a copy to watch over a pint.
