Wiscombe Park

The weekend off after Channel Islands was spent mostly catching up with work and sorting out the jungle which was now our garden.  We then have about 6 weekends of meetings so we had to try to make the most of it.

Off to Wiscombe after work Friday evening.  Deb was working this weekend so I was once again travelling alone.  Dave would be down early on Saturday morning.

Wiscombe is great to drive as long as you don’t want to take too many risks as it can so easily bite!  I have never gone too well here although I enjoy it.  A few early runners, including myself managed a dry run early in practice.  Then, in typical Wiscombe fashion, it rained.  And rained a bit more.  The rest of the day was obviously damp & slippery.  Not too much of a problem as we have another practice on Sunday morning.

Sunday practice was still damp, but parts of the hill were beginning to dry.

1st class runs and I manage to qualify, but only just!  Unfortunately, Dad just missed out ending up 13th qualifier.  Onto the run off and I make a right pigs ear of the Esses and try to make up time going into Sawbench hairpin.  Make another mistake there and the time is lost.  End up 7th.  May have to count this one as a dropped score.  Simon Durling carried on his great form and bagged another win from Rob Turnbull who was a superb 2nd.  Grovesy made an error approaching Bunny’s Leap and caught a wheel on the barrier, he then ended up spinning on the bank on the right with no points.  Perhaps 7th wasn’t so bad!

2nd Class runs and I qualify much better.  The meeting was then held up by a fairly big accident involving Rob Turnbull at the top of the hill.  Thankfully, after some very professional assistance by the Marshals & Rescue crew, Rob was removed safely from the car with a broken leg/ankle but otherwise OK.  A report from the chief medical officer brought the news that Rob was off to hospital and had started to swear again.  This was good news to all.

Onto the run off and once again Dad had missed out leaving me sole use of the car.  Grovesy is up in front of me and goes fastest.  I chase his time as hard as I feel comfortable but early braking into the last corner loses any chance I had of beating his time.  Simon Durling had qualified fastest and I just hoped he could either beat us both or slot in behind me into 3rd.  Unfortunately he did neither and split me and Martin, leaving me 3rd.  Not so bad.  Quite happy with the day as a whole although Simon had gained dramatically on Dad’s points tally.

Off to Ireland next week for my 2nd trip to Craigantlet.  Looking forward to it.
