View from Gurston Down
The August Bank Holiday National Hillclimb at Gurston Down was certainly a very quick affair with it starting at 8:30 and finishing by 4:00 in the afternoon and Sandra Tomlin had the only off during the day. It was another strong weekend for Groves and Ransom with Martin taking the morning shoot out away from Scott. The afternoon shoot out was looking to be on for another double win for Martin but once again Scott kept the pressure on Martin by taking the second run off, which just failed to beat the outright hill record. Martin’s win also meant he has edged even closer to a second title, but Scott can still do it if he gets a hill record at Prescott and at Doune. Once again there was a no show from Willem Toet because the car is still not ready. There was also no sign of Tim and Will Mason this weekend. Jos Goodyear had another very strong weekend, qualifying the turbo charged Pilbeam both times but in the second run off, after qualifying in a really good 4th, he was unfortunately denied the run after a problem on the start line. Matt Harrison broke the class record in his SPA Judd in the morning and amazingly got under his record again in the final class run. Unfortunately Mike Endean couldn’t make it out with his Puma Gould because it was not ready to race. I think this weekend, when it is Prescott, Mike is going to take the car out for the first time this year to a Guernsey Sprint. Well done to Tom New for wrapping up the first of the championships by winning the Powermec Hillclimb Leaders in the afternoon run, but he was unfortunately denied the class win by the ever quicker Tony Wiltshire in his Ralt. It was an up and down weekend for Sandra Tomlin after clinching the Ladies Hill Record she went too quick in her second run and went straight on at Karousel, which sadly denied son Oliver the chance to set a qualifying time for the second run off.
The whole Guille family were out in their two OMSs. Chris and Geoff did the usual in their ex-Willis car whilst Jackie had the smaller car, which she ran on her own. Unfortunately on her last run the driveshaft broke on the line, but the good news is that each time she got to the top unlike her dad who binned it at Guernsey last year. Paul Webster at last debuted his new Dallara 2 litre racing car and he it got to the top on each run. There was also a no show from Rob Turnbull who is still recovering from his bump at Wiscombe. Hope to see out again soon Rob. The ex-Turnbull/Wishart Gould has definitely now been sold to John Waggitt and he will probably paint it a yucky colour of green. Once again Bill Chaplin was out in his newly sold Force sharing not with usual man Lloyd Klimpke but with MotoGp commentator Toby Moody. As you would expect he and Bill dominated the class with no sign of Adam Steele. Bill will also be sharing with Toby again at Prescott this weekend. Can Toby stay on the black stuff again??
See you at Prescott
