Roy Lane - and my first hill climb
memory.
In 2003 Georgia and I turned up at Shelsley and started
taking and ultimately filming the British Hill Climb Championship. Over
the last 7 years we have joined that large and great hill climb extended
family. Like them or not they all make up your hill climb relatives and
the family feeling is strong ! We have met and chatted with Roy and
Betty many times over the last several years and feel very sad on the
news of his death. Likewise Bob Dayson was a similar acquaintance and
was a true gentleman and beer buyer when we ate with him at the Barbon
Hill Climb for the last couple of years. These hill climb 'relatives'
are part of a greater picture of a greater sport then few people ever
experience. We send our wishes to all who have know these 2 greats, our
personal experiences are but a few years, but for many others it cover
several decades. The two pictures that follow are now very important to
me and and Roy Lane's story is now even more graphic. In the mid eighties I went to a few midland hill climbs prior to
becoming a drag racing addict for the next decade. I have always had a
vision of a car at a hill climb leaving the corner with such astonishing
speed that I found it hard to read what was written on the rear wing,
the message on the rear wing was 'Put the boot in', the venue Prescott,
the corner Pardon hairpin (as I now know), the driver Roy Lane. I was
never sure until today what it said on the rear wing, put your foot in,
etc. The picture shows the real words. Oh, and Roy did win 90
British run offs. Remember the achievement. Love to all who need it at this sad time.

New videos. I have posted several videos from Jersey,
Doune, Craigantlet and Wiscombe.
I will add them to this page later, but
in the meantime you can see all the videos on the following weblinks;
And
still the outright records continue to fall to the New Graeme Wight Racing
Predator at the hands of Lee Adams. Here's a video of the GWRacing
Raptor taking a track record at the picturesque venue at Kames.
The car is available to order now and will take any size of driver,
not just skinny wippets. :-)

So it is all over now. Final positions.
A great fun meeting. The big car battles were over so it was down to
the bike engined cars to provide the spice. Jonathon Rarity in a half
naked Ghost, Lee Adams in the fully clothed Raptor and Will Hall and
Eynon Price in their size 8 Forces.
Gurston Down rounds 29 & 30 Rob
Turnbull & Trevor Willis. Scott Moran wins his 2nd British National Hill Climb Championship
Gurston,
well it was dry for most of Saturday, not so for Sunday. Rob Turnbull
won the first round and Trevor Willis spun. Roger out qualified Scott
Moran for the second and Scott had to wait in the pits to see if he had
won his second championship. A final official confirmation was made and
Scott had done it again. Simon and Jane Harratt left the hill. Will Hall
became the Y-Gelli Book Auctions Challenge Trophy holder.. A few

Lee Corbet and the Channel Islands Mafia according to
Jon Moody invaded at the weekend, We made them happy. Lee got to do the
middle box with Eddie Walder, respect dude. The absence of Martin Groves
and Paul Ranson from now deprives us of a battle for Gurston, Prescott
and the dog' bollocks of the Doune track. What a darn blast, but we must
move on. It's Gurston this weekend and Scottie will get the well
deserved bubbly again. A few shots here, although I was having an off

The
End Martin Groves and Paul Ranson are out of this years championship.
They had engine problems with their own engine and now the loan
ex Mike Dean has also gone up in smoke. With no chance of an engine for Shelsley Walsh they will not be
competing at any of the further rounds. A word from me.
BUGGER I wanted to see Scott and Martin battling at Doune. Scott Moran said he was also gutted as he wanted the battle to go on,
well at least as far as Prescott. Trevor Willis now needs to get his car fixed after Loton at the
weekend.
The disasters at Ireland continued for the second year
for Martin Groves and Paul Ranson with an engine failure before they
could even try to qualify in the mixed weather conditions. Unless the
engine problem can be resolved before Shelsley in 2 weeks time then that
is the end of Martin Groves championship battle with Scott Moran. No
Shelsley, Gurtson, Prescott or Doune decider. Having travelled with
Martin and Paul this weekend I feel the pain. So I will update this
'report' later in the week with a more balanced write up. A few shots in
the 2009 Gallery &

Wiscombe Park rounds 23 & 24 - Trevor
Willis - Roger Moran
Round 23 was conventional Wiscombe, a dry, moss covered
track let the ever nimble Trevor Willis put a winners sticker on a blue
car. Round 24 was also conventional Wiscomb, it added heavy rain to the
mix part way through qualifying. It made a mess to the normal
qualifiers. At the height of the rain Martin Groves followed Trevor up
the hill, but with their times now 6 seconds off the pace. Scott Moran
as the next runner pulled the car off the track and didn't bother to
take his qualifying run. Where does he get this maturity from? Eynon
Price then got a well deserved second place behind the ever youthful
Roger Moran. The Martlet of Adam Steel showed true value for money,
getting into the run off, as did Sandra Tomlin whilst Oliver watched and
did a rain dance. Danby's table
link to the table shows a 4 point lead to Scott Moran over Martin
Groves, Trevor Willis still in third, but Roger Moran has now passed
Chris Merrick and Eynons in 8th (in a bike engined car)! We got great
onboards on the Ranson/Grioves and Moran cars. Some links will appear
later.

Guernsey round 22 - Groves with a stonker
of a run equals Roy Lane's 90 wins
Well it’s another home win as far as we are
concerned over here. Martin Groves pulled a stonker out of the bag on
the last run of the day to take the 22nd round win with a 34.47. Trevor
Willis was a close (well close enough) second with a 36.17 and
Guernsey's other star in a reasonably price car, Chris Guille 3rd
with a 36.43. Weather conditions were uncomfortably wet, so much so that
yours truly commandeered the commentary van at the top for the
afternoons activities to have some comfort at what is most likely to
have been my last event as a commentator. (?)
A great event despite the conditions - C.I. reports by Lee Corbett - mucho thanks.
Roger Moran posted a 36.57 to take 4th. 7th was Geoff Guille 37.29 (yes, he’s
definitely buying now!). Will Hall spun in the esses Notably Nick Saunders didn’t make the second run
off after an excursion into the wall on the first straight. Emma Rayson managed to beat husband Scott in the
non-transaxle sand racing cars…. Probably as she was the only one not
going for the right hand wave in the esses this year!!! And, the hill climb winners stickers may now be seen and valid on
a Bronze coloured car, and 2 shades of yellow cars.

GMCCC.co.uk site Richard Danby's has an updated championship table at
www.zipp.co.uk. Here's a
link to the table Danby's Table shows that there's 2 points
difference between Groves and Scott, 22 rounds gone.
Guernsey round 21 - Chris Guille
Chris Guille wins the first top 12 run off and is the
1st Channel Islander to do so since Andy Priaulx !!!!! In a rain soaked
eventful first part of the day Martin Groves failed to qualify after
spinning a full 360 at high speed on the final straight. Chris Merrick
qualified, but then Tom New crashed the metallic green Gould on the
final straight, but this time with too much damage for competing in the
run off. Tom was okay, but visibly shaken and had a check over by the
medical crew and all was okay. Chris Guille 38.69, Scott Moran 39.13,
Eynon Price 40.30,
Will Hall 40.35,
Roger Moran 40.77,
Paul Haimes 40.92,
Wallace Menzies 40.96, Geoff Guille 41.07 (bet he's buying!!!), Paul Ranson 41.14,
Nick Saunders 41.73 It is still raining on Guernsey, so we wait to see if the Merrick/New
car can be repaired in time for the second qualifying (no). Anyway the sun is
shinning here, so it's off to Bewdley for fish and chips and then a pint
at the World Famus Shelsley Walsh.
Jersey rounds 19 & 20 - Moran - Moran -
Roger & Scott !!
There's life in the old dogs yet.., so here's a report
from the Black Dog ! Chris Merrick qualified top dog for the first run
off. Roger Moran took the win with a stunning 38.37, followed by Chris
Merrick 38.52, Martin Groves 38.61, Trevor Willis 38.67, then Scott
Moran with a 38.76. See just how close those top 5 are on times !! Second qualifying in Jersey and the weather turned out to be the same
as Dudley = raining. Scottie won with a 39.44, then Chris Merrick 40.47,
Martin Groves 40.75, Trevor Willis 41.50. Eynon Price came along in
fifth place but notable none qualifiers were Paul Ranson and Roger
Moran. Well done Roger. Refusing to bet money that Chris Merrick would beat Trevor Willis the
commentators decided that a leg of the suit was the stake.. Excuse the
photo quality, it was taken on a 1st generation I Phone. James is now
legless in the Black Dog !! Talking of suites, here's their mode of transport.
Harewood Rounds 17 & 18 - Groves -
Scottie
Scott Moran had a problem with the wheel speed sensor in the
first run off, Martin won it. For the second round it was back to normal
(Scottie's words) and Scott won with Martin second. That would make
Martin championship leader even with an Islanders engine. Thank someone
that Deano still gets to compete.....(all be it just his bits)..... We
stayed at home and watched the Tennis, it was cheaper, and really quite
good. Hic. So no photos or video. Hopefully the Richard at Zipp
photography can help with a view from behind his lens at Harewood for a
few select shots. Source of information Scott Moran, Tom'e New & Kerry -
more accurate then the BBC, I think..
Back from Scottieland. Images now in the

So how
was it for everyone at home? We went via the Lake District and enjoyed a
late evening unstressed drive to Doune on Thursday and stayed in the
Woodside for a couple of drams. A nice relaxed Friday and then the GWR
pikey caravan appeared and it all stepped up a gear. Saturday was fine
with a very good quality BBQ (1st time there, £10, ace, please attend
next year), bed was quite early (in the morning) and Sunday
provided blistering temperatures and a consistent track. What followed
next is a piece of history. Martin Groves shoved the ailing (engine not
right for 2 meetings) Gould to the first sub 36 second run. Martin held
the record at 36.00 seconds and both Martin and Scott got to within
1/100th of a second off this time at the September meeting last June,
this was including the fact the Graeme Wight Junior in the Predator V10
had well oiled the track a few runs earlier with at 36.2s run. Junior
gets another mention later... Anyway. Martin ran a blistering 35.95s in the first run off to claim the
first sub 36s. In the afternoon Scott out qualified Martin and sat in
the paddock as he watched Martin's time of 36.11s. Cool, calm, and
collected, Scott smashed in a 35.62. Absolutely astonishing, especially
on Martin's hill (although Junior would argue who's hill it is !). Paul
Ranson did well, not too many humans can do a 36.xx at Doune and Roger
proved that he is still not old with another 36. Let's not forget Trevor
Willis with 36s in both run offs. So then we went with the GWR pikey
team to Aberdeen for a few days. I broke a rib, Junior pulled the
ligaments in his knee and required me to take him to A&E. How could I
refuse?, I had a camera with me.. Graeme's new Raptor is simply
stunning, and even more in it's attention to detail. That he can be
twice British Champion and the builder/designer of the Predator V10 and
the 'scaleable' Raptor is beyond me. If it was WWII then he would have
made a Spitfire. A week later we had to leave, we did not want to,
and I don't think our hosts did either. I hope Junior's 'sore' knee gets
better, maybe at the same rate as my ribs, we will all have memories.
Graeme wanted to give us a spin in Les Mutch's GWR DAX, but fortunately
he had a bad knee and couldn't use the clutch. Kevin gave me (slow down)
and Georgia (go faster) a passenger ride in the car that does 45s up
Doune. Simply astonishing - under 3 sec to 60 and a road car !
Felt like an EXUP ! AND I need a job, and we need some sponsorship to
keep this up. If you like the stuff we do then a small donation via
this Paypal link of £5/£10/£more would be really helpful.
Dalek says. Scotland beautiful for colonisation, didn't get inflated
at Doune, but got pressure at the Predator farm and a day trip to
Fintray.
We ran onboard cameras on the Moran's and the
Groves / Ranson team, the quality of the footage and the sound is simply
stunning. The other thing that
happened this weekend was the MotoGP, their video is not quite as good
quality, but the action was even better than Loton. Here's a link to the
event on BBC I player
MotoGp - Catalunya. Man on a mission award must go to Will Hall, at this rate he will get a
British Championship number in a 1600cc car, he is troubling drivers
with over twice that capacity! Team Ranson & Groves had an annoying
vibration problem, Martin got 2 second places and Paul also achieved 2
top 10 finishes in the troubled car. Lets hope it's okay for Doune.
Remember to book tickets for the BBQ, see the link below.

Rounds 11 & 12 - Scottie -
Scottie - Gallery It's getting tougher at the top. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in
the midday sun, and yep they all turned out true to fashion. Scott Moran
won both run offs, Paul Ranson had a second, and oh so nearly his
elusive first win. Will Hall did stunningly well, Eynon parked it in the
recticel, Tom New created a new hole in the bank, maybe New Hole would
be a good new 'feature' name. Sean Gould showed that the fine handling
Goulds could do at least a 360 in the esses and handle so well you can
drive them away, as several other Gould drivers (and a certain M. Groves
demonstrated). Paul Haimes showed that Dalarras do not like cement dust
and Martin Groves latter proved that the Goulds also had a distinct
dislike for things not tarmac. Still we cannot blame the blue little
Peugeot for the oil it deposited, it's a great car, and a crowd amuser,
all be it in need of an engine without the extra holes! At the end of
the day the esses had so many lines of cement dust, tire marks, muck and
whatever that it would have had to be the last round of he championship
with a gap of 1/10th of a point to try any harder. Wise men, big men,
(and women), keep it sunny side up.
Talking of sun and the reflections
it can cause, keep this a secret...
Al
Rayner is 50
and no secret is the disappointing performance from Oliver Tomlin,
his mother Sandra had to run the car for most of the weekend without his
help (or even him taking his allotted drives), what an unacceptable
performance! Even more so because he had left his wife at home labouring
for most of the weekend. Congratulations to Oliver and Ellie on the
birth of 'squirt' or 'sprog' or whatever her name ultimately becomes.
[Update] Eva Rose Tomlin. I was nearly 50
when you were born, said Al a while later..................

It was the third La vie en bleu at Prescott at the
weekend. A fantastic collection of cars on display and
travelling up the picturesque Gloucestershire speed hill climb venue
and it didn't rain. Here's a gallery of the photographs.
The
highlight of the weekend had to be running an onboard camera on the
Senna Lotus T98 F1 car. The camera4sports bullet once again providing outstanding footage. This was the third attempt at
filming the Senna car, the previous years it was just too wet to
consider running cameras. What a fantastic event, great
organisation, great food and wine, just great. Well done to
everyone.
We met with Patrick Morgan of
Dawn Trader Performance
who run the ex Ayrton Senna Lotus T98 F1 Turbo car. I wanted to
attach an onboard camera to it, Patrick looked a little nervous ! I
then produced the kit we have developed and he started to smile.
Well the result was well worth it. This is a priceless car, a
heritage in the world of racing. Senna was one of my two heros (the
other one is Rossi), to film on this car, what a honour. Enjoy the
onboard clip for now -
Onboard the SennaLotus T98 at La vie

make a little bit up using last years footage.

Belgium - this is the legendary Black Bugatti, the last of the great

to a European collector and coming back to Cheltenham for this
event. 1986 Lotus 98 Turbo Renault formerly driven by

Harewood
Rounds 7 & 8 - Roger & Scott Moran Gallery Wow, what a race meeting !
Roger took the first run off win by qualifying last and then running
first. He out qualified Scott in the second run off and on a wet
track with no need to save the car for Scott, he really gave it some
beans. He managed a fourth place in the second run off by some fine
and sideways driving. Trevor Willis had a high speed moment as he
tried to catch the 59 second run of Paul Haimes, this was a
bit of a tall order as Paul had actually done a 61 second run but
Trevor had misheard the time !!! It was scary to watch. Martin
Groves put in a very impressive run in the second run off to claim
two third places. Even happier than all of them was Paul Ranson
who's slow season start was turned around with two well deserved
second places. His time of only 0.01 of a second behind Scott Moran
is even more impressive as the car does not benefit from traction
control. Smiles all round, rivals helping each other, no fuel stops, and no
cheating. What a sport. Eynon Price got the nutter of the day award
with a beautiful example of his rally driving skills enabling him to
catch the sideways car and re-plan his route around the corner. This was a great weeks hillclimbing but also included the sad loss
of 6 times champion Tony Marsh and 'boys own hero' Allan Staniforth,
both passing away in the week. They have left the hills. In a separate, but also sad note Jos Goodyear has also pulled out of
the championship in his beautifully prepared Pilbeam. Meanwhile at the fintray Hill Climb Donald McCaskill took the class
record in his 600bhp EVO, here's his
onboard.
Sandra Tomlin MP97 looking good

win.

So wet they had to cancel one of the run offs. As I arrived at the
top of the hill the heavens opened and stayed open until the water
was running down my back. Will Hall tried to get me as he exited the
hairpin and this slow speed off caused a track inspection and a
delay to the meeting. Martin Groves won the only run off to be held
as the Moran car seemed to be suffering due to the traction control
settings which were then modified to good effect for Harewood the
next day. The most fun was had at the end of the meeting as a
tractor was used to drag all the vehicles and trailers out of the
soft grass paddock.
It was mildly moist !
Will Hall, Missed me ! (not by much)

Mud glorious mud
Shelsley Walsh 3rd 4th May Venue wonderfully prepared, maybe just a little bit more striming
needed. Marshalls, rescue, officials, timing, and ALL put in
tremendous effort that was visible. This was not a national round,
but a local venue, so we ventured out to watch the 'fun'. A new
season, a wet, greasy, changing, and challenging track. The track
bit back. We normally only follow the nationals so it was quite
interesting how much this meeting could affect them. Jos Goodyear
had a big shunt and the car is fairly heavily damaged. John Bradburn
had an enormous, horrifying accident where he managed to spin, flip,
do a 360 mid air horizontal rotate, roll and end up down where the
rhubarb used to be and then walk away. Easily the biggest off I have
ever seen at Shelsley. As usual we had only just met John the night
before and chatted for the first time. Then a yellow Caterham ended
up in the same place. The Ralt was photographed in the pits and then
crashed at Kennel bend, John Bradburn was photographed in the pits
and then crashed.... we didn't take many photos this weekend which
made it all the stranger. Then the blue OMS did a graceful
slow roll into top esse. Will Jos and John manage to get their cars
rebuilt for Barbon next weekend? Trevor Willis showed his speed and
consistency in an awe inspiring reading of the track, the conditions
and the grip to record 2 very smooth wins. Watch him pick up the
points when the leading Goulds have a failure or their power does
not feature. Oh and to round the weekend off Valentino Rossi won the
MotoGP and said he was "Focka Fasta" on live BBC TV. He was as well
! Here is a small

Prescott
Rounds 3 & 4 - Groves - Groves - no hill record!! It was
great to see the Coley's sounding and going well over the weekend,
it was great to see the Gould of Rob Turnbull on song. It was a
great night in the Prescott Lodge as great food a good band and a
large crowd had fun. I got 2 sharp wake up calls on Sunday morning,
the first was a Pavarotti loud "tea or coffee, Richard?", and a
little shake of the tent from Roger Moran. At 7am. After the
Marshalls pound the night before? All I could do was giggle, maybe
this was retribution for Holly meeting a Dalek waiting outside the
door, or it could be for something else I have done. The second was
from Rob Turnbull who decided to crash exactly where I was standing
on Orchard. Here's a photo of Rob on his way to wake me up
from Gary who was standing next to me, and has a sequence of the
shots there. Anyway, Martin Groves won both run offs. The Moran's
took it easy with a troubling gear shift to bag sensible points.
Martin is amazed to have scored points in all of the first 4 rounds
of a season.. We were 'off duty' at the weekend, so no video, only a
couple of photos, and a Dalek on the startline. Here's the
